So what are Package Holidays?

Package holidays could easily be described as a holiday in a box. A package holidays are holidays that start as soon as you arrive at the airport or sea port. The price paid for package holidays will include the cost of your travel arrangements to get to your chosen destination, and the accommodation.

What happens when I get to the destination airport or sea port?

Most, but cerainly not all of the travel companies that sell package holidays build in the cost of the transfer from the destination airport or sea port to your accommodation. Some will offer the cost of the transfer as an optional and you need to decide whether to buy this with your holiday or not. It is a good idea to make absolutely certain if this is included or not. We have heard some nightmare stories of people and some with very young children being stranded at Gran Canaria aiport as soon they arrive. The first job in hand is to arrange a taxi from the airport to the accommodation. This is not always cheap, and if you have a large family, this may mean you have to travel in two taxis, depending on the local law. We donīīt need to tell you that this is going to push up the cost of your holiday before you have even started because you will need to repeat the exercise to return to the airport.

Are taxis my only option?

Certainly not! A large majority of companies offering package holidays have arrangements with car hire companies, or there own car hire department. You will often have the option of booking a hire car at the time you make the reservation for your holiday. Depending on the deal you are offered, it might be cost effective to hire a car independently of your holiday. Unless time is against you, a little research could well prove to be very prudent.

Is food Included?

For some package holidays yes, but certainly not for all, perhaps not even for the vast majority of package holidays that are sold, and enjoyed by thousands of people every year. You are likely to discover that the accommodation coming as part of your holiday will have a restaurant. Package holidays that include all your food and drink, are usually referred to as "all inclusive".

What is best for me and my family? Bed and Breakfast, half board or full board?

Quite simply, you pay your money, you take your choice, but please remember the following:

 

"Bed and Breakfast" means you are responsible for making your own arrangements for lunch and dinner,

 

"Half Board" means you are responsible for making you own arrangements for lunch,

 

"Full Board" means all your meals are taken of for you. Your meals are usually served in a large room, and often come in the form of a buffet. The downside to included meals in this way, is that you will be restricted to meal times.

 

Drinks that you consume during your mealtimes are included in the package, but this usually does not include the bar.

So what are "All Inclusive" package holidays?

What can I say? No really, we still get asked this question from time to time, so I have included it here. The answer? DOH! All inclusive package holidays include everything. href="/en/book_flights.htm">Flights, accommodation, transfers, food and drink, while you are inside the accommodation. Sometimes bars, that are around the accommodation have an agreement with the tour operator, and your holiday then, will also include the drinks that you drink there. The benefit to all inclusive package holidays, is the price you see is the price you pay. This can be especially useful, if you have a large family, and trying to holiday on a budget. The downside, at least in my own humble opinion, is that this does encourage people to stay very close to the accommodation during the entirety of their holiday, and discourages them from getting out and about to explore.
