Bentejui wen-tagiit in Tuareg means("he who walks with long strides").

Bentejui was the "Guanarteme de Telde" or the king of Telde, and it was Bentejui that led the last pocket of resistance in the interior of Gran Canaria against the armed invaders of Pedro Vera.

Bentejui and his men facing a future loss of their identity as Canarians, chose death over surrender, and plunged to their deaths from "La Fortaleza de Ansite" (which is still standing today) near Santa LucĂa de Gran Canaria.
