The Pérez Galdós House Museum (Casa Museo Pérez Galdós) is the actual birthplace of Benito Pérez Galdós (1843 - 1920). He is considered to be, the most distinguished writer from the Canary Islands. The house and place of birth of Benito Pérez Galdós was turned into a museum (Pérez Galdós House Museum) commemorating the author's life and work.
Many of the places of interest that are available for you to visit are converted houses built around a courtyard. This five-storey building, that is the Pérez Galdós House Museum, is no exception and a fine example of Canary Island architecture.
The courtyard in the Pérez Galdós House Museum contains a statue of the famous writer Benito Pérez Galdós. There is a reason that houses were built this way. In ancient times if you owned a plot of land and chose to build a house in the middle of your plot and convert the rest to garden area, although you owned the land because it wasn't built on the government could seize it for whatever purpose without paying the owner.
This is also the reason that many historic houses, including Pérez Galdós House Museum have roads running right past their front door. To get around this law the Canarians used to build right up to the edge of their land and their open space or garden if you will became a courtyard in the middle of their home. There are many examples of this still in existence today and the Pérez Galdós House Museum is just one of them.
The Pérez Galdós House Museum, opened it's doors in 1964 and still has the original interior decorations along with personal objects associated with the life of Benito Pérez Galdós, including portraits and items that have been brought here from his other houses in Madrid and Santander. Some of which he designed and made by Benito Pérez Galdós himself. The Pérez Galdós House Museum also contains photographs of many of the actors that appeared in his plays. The Pérez Galdós House Museum located in Las Palmas is also home to original works and their translations, correspondence, minutes of meetings and dissertations from the much respected author Benito Pérez Galdós.
